Harcourts - Helensville
Welcome to our Neck of the Woods!
Helensville is a town in the Rodney District of the North Island of New Zealand. It is sited 40km northwest of Auckland, above the Kaipara River and close to the southern extremity of the Kaipara Harbour. The area around Helensville was originally called Te Awaroa, meaning "The long path" or "The long river valley".
The first European settlers in the district were Scottish timber millers named McLeod, but who had actually come from Nova Scotia to New Zealand. Pioneer timber miller John McLeod and his wife Helen, built a single-storey kauri home in 1862 overlooking the timber mill established by John and his brother Isaac. This home was called "Helen's Villa" - a name which was quickly adapted and adopted by the town.
Helensville features scores of fine old buildings, especially kauri cottages and villas situated close to the town centre and some excellent commercial structures such as the Old Post Office building. The Pioneer Museum and courthouse provide a fascinating window on the town's past. Because it is within easy commuting distance of Auckland City, Auckland's North Shore, West Auckland and Albany, and because of comparatively low property prices, Helensville has become an attractive place for residents wanting to get away from city living. People view it as having the best of both worlds - a quieter, small town pace of life in a rural atmosphere with a combination of residential living to lifestyle block farming, dairying, sheep farming, but combined with close proximity to all the facilities offered by the country's largest city.
A healthy visitor industry, spurred by a wide range of attractions and 'things to do', a growing appreciation of Helensville's special historic ambience, and its close proximity to Auckland City, means that the town now looks to tourism to lead it into the future. Helensville and the surrounding area offer the visitor a huge variety of things to do and places to visit. Attractions range from peaceful garden visits to heart-stopping sky diving, insightful museum visits to horse trekking along stunning beaches or fishing on the Kaipara Harbour. There are also river cruises, natural hot pools, golf, tours, walks, cafes and restaurants, and bars and pubs, plus heaps more. Local amenities and facilities include the local Countdown supermarket, Mitre 10, Farm Source, medical centre and chemist, dentist, visitor information centre, library, vet, and a gym.
Come and enjoy Helensville!
