Moving to Hawera?
With its heart in dairying, Hawera welcomes visitors arriving from the south with a giant cow icon. Hawera is home to the largest single-site dairy factory in the southern hemisphere and known for processing around thirteen million litres of milk every day.
Most visitors come through to Hawera to explore the Tawhiti Museum, which features life-size figures, moulded from casts of real people, engagingly capturing the past. Meaning 'the burnt place' or 'breath of fire', Hawera's name is taken from the old Maori village of Te Hawera. The town's name is particularly significant because of its history of devastating fires. Blazes destroyed parts of the Hawera in 1884, 1895 as well as 1912. Hawera was so fire-prone that underwriters demanded that a water tower be built as a fire-fighting reservoir. The fifty-four metre Water Tower was completed in 1914 and is one of Taranaki's best-known landmarks - constructed from 1340 tonnes of hand-mixed concrete!
